    Starlett Carter
Co-Founder, COO and General Counsel, Kanarys

Starlett (Star) Carter (she/her/hers) is an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as the Chief Operating Officer, General Counsel, and co-founder of Kanarys, Inc.  Kanarys is an online platform for individual contributors to anonymously rate, review and submit surveys on diversity and inclusion at their current and former employers. Data from submissions is analyzed through artificial intelligence and natural language processing, allowing partner companies to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing them and to build a more inclusive workplace culture. Kanarys has been covered by Forbes, AfroTech, Business Insider and HR.com.

As a woman who experienced harassment early in her career, Star is passionate about ensuring workplace culture is safe and welcoming for all employees, free from discrimination and inclusive of the aspects that make individuals unique as it relates to their sexuality, gender, religion, age, ability and race.

Prior to joining Kanarys, Star served as an associate counsel at Hudson Advisors, L.P., a globally integrated asset manager, and as counsel at Sidley Austin LLP, a large international law firm. Passionate about giving back to her community, she also successfully provided representation on a number of pro bono matters.  Star was previously recognized for her pro bono services by the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program as the Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year.

Star was recognized for her corporate practice several times: on the 2016 Texas Rising Stars list, the 2013 Lawyers of Color Hot List, a selection of early-to-mid career minority attorneys from the southwest region, and the 2012 40 under 40 list by Dallas Furniture Bank for her professional achievements and civic efforts.  She currently serves as the immediate past chairwoman of the board of directors for Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, a non-profit organization that provides free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents in Texas.

Starlett received her Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Business Administration with honors from the University of Texas at Austin. She resides in Dallas, Texas, with her husband and two children.
