TXWSW, Limitless

Happy Tuesday!

Celebrating our Limitless Leaders: today we honor Mindy Jones. Mindy Jones is Managing Principal of Pyxis Care Management, a TXWSW Philanthropy Committee member and TXWSW Board member. Read more about why she gives back: https://txwsw.com/limitless-leaders/

Forbes has published its annual list of the most powerful women in business which can be found here. The cover article notes that while the corporate glass ceiling remains firmly in place, there have been some noteworthy cracks including women taking the helm at international giants such as Accenture, Best Buy and CDW. The one industry, which ironically espouses its diversity efforts, has actually become “whiter, maler, and middle-age-er” since the financial crisis. All this in spite of the fact that “2018 IMF study identified the benefits of female leadership of banks worldwide, at least at the board level. It found that institutions with larger shares of women directors had higher capital buffers, a lower proportion of nonperforming loans, and greater resistance to stress.” The question is why an industry that is rooted in analytics ignores them when it comes to diversity? The full article can be found here.

The next article explores the pitfalls of hiring for a cultural fit. If cultural fit is defined as someone you would want to have a beer with after work, the result is a homogenous culture with everyone looking alike and thinking the same. The whole point of diversity is to bring different points of view to the table to improve performance. The full article can be found here.

Finally, Forbes published an article on the best way to mentor young women to help them translate academic success into workplace success which is not a straightforward path. Women are often loath to showcase their achievements (grades speak for themselves) and are less apt to speak up, and overcoming these tendencies are critical to career success. The full article can be found here.

You will note that we have our two amazing fall fundraisers set so far. For Houston we have a treat – a private magic show featuring Champion Magician: Ben Jackson. Our Houston committee has arranged for an amazing array of goodies for the raffle all from female-owned businesses. In Austin, we have our wonderful Boots & Blackjack Casino Night at the Line Hotel. Thank you to the following local Austin companies that have generously donated to our November 7th Silent Auction. Attend for your chance to bid on these stellar items benefiting the Young Women’s Preparatory Network. Get your tickets here

I would ask each of you to consider corporate sponsorship of TXWSW. Benefits include attendance at our flagship events and recognition for your firm.
