A Woman’s View from the Street 2/16/21

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you and yours survived our crazy cold weather and snowstorm! As most of you know, I am from the East Coast, so this weather is nothing new for me, but boy is it different without even a snow shovel in our garage! I was out plowing a path for the pups with a rake!

Our event this week is Michele Smith’s coveted Resiliency Training Workshop because resilience is something we all need to get through these stressors that come at us each day. Michele will share techniques that can be used in just a few minutes each day to improve coping skills and overall well-being.

In addition to a record setting snowstorm, Austin experienced another rare event – one of its own, Whitney Wolfe Herd became a billionaire, when her company Bumble went public last week. Even though women make up over 50% of the population, women account for less than 5% of the world’s billionaires. Wolf Herd’s company was founded based on the sexual harassment she encountered working at Tinder and women experience in society at large. Bumble is now the second most popular dating app in the US and one where harassment is rigorously policed. The full article can be found here.

From the more good news file, former NEA partner Dayna Grayson and Ex-Uber Executive, Rachel Holt raised $140 for their new venture fund focused on industrial start-ups. It is nice to see a woman-owned firm raise substantial capital especially given their focus on diverse teams. The full article can be found here.

Our calendar is filling up including an online cooking lesson, economic outlook with Dr. Lev Borodovsky and a series of happy hours with the TXWSW board so you can get to know us better and give us your feedback. Check out our site for more details.

I would ask each of you to consider corporate sponsorship of TXWSW. Benefits include attendance at our flagship events and recognition for your firm.  And most importantly, you help us support the life-changing work of the Young Women’s Preparatory Network. To learn more about YWPN, you can find a short video here. To learn more and sponsorship, you may find our sponsor information here. Additionally, we would be happy to create a custom sponsorship for you. Please contact Bianca King at developmentdirector@txwsw.com

Kind regards

Christine
