A Woman’s View from the Street 12/6/18

TXWSW, Limitless

Happy Thursday:
Huge congratulations to our philanthropy committees in Austin, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio on your successful fall fundraisers. The committees each did an amazing job putting on great events and we appreciate all of your efforts. I also want to thank our sponsors and those of you who came out to support the Young Women’s Preparatory Network and the life changing work they do.

More than a dozen of you emailed me our first article today. It seems Wall Street has taken Mike Pence’s stance of not being alone with a woman to new levels. It amazed me that Pence’s comment during the campaign did not ring alarm bells for women – if men avoid being alone with women, then how can a man ever have a female direct report? To put it in context, Condolezza Rice could never have held the Secretary of State position because there are many times a Secretary of State would need to have one on one meetings with the President. This approach to the #metoo issue is both parochial and discriminatory, and we all need to be up in arms about this issue. The full article can be found here.
The good news is that more surveys show that Americans believe women and men should have equal roles at work and in politics, however, a quarter of folks believe that women should still do more of the homemaking and child-rearing. The issue is with only 24 hours in a day, if the majority of housework is left to women, we are being set up for failure in the workplace. The full article can be found here.
And finally, with the holidays fast approaching, I have this next article saved in the browser on my phone. Gretchen Rubin, author of the Happiness Project, lays out 30 easy inexpensive, accessible ways to make yourself happier. Right now. What could be a better gift to yourself than that? The full article can be found here.
We have our 10th annual State of the Markets coming up on Thursday, April 25th in Dallas. This year we are honored to have the legendary Alice Gould and CIO of the Year TJ Carlson joining us. With the recent market turmoil, you will not want to miss this event!
Also, I would ask each of you to consider corporate sponsorship of TXWSW. Benefits include attendance at our flagship events and recognition for your firm.
